Questions supply yards ask about selling on Soil Direct

Getting started
Do I need a Square account to sell on Soil Direct?
Yes. Soil Direct runs on your Square account: you sign in with Square, your products and locations come from Square, and customers pay you through Square.
If you don't use Square yet, create a Square account first, add the items you sell, then sign in to Soil Direct.
What does setup involve?
A guided six-step setup: choose which Square locations deliver and how far, add your trucks and what they charge, match your products to Soil Direct product types, confirm prices per location, set how much each truck can carry, and review.
Most of the information is already in Square, so the setup pre-fills your items, photos, locations and prices. It only imports what exists in Square, so add your items there before you start.
Does Soil Direct review suppliers before they go live?
Yes. After you finish setup, the Soil Direct team reviews your yard. Your products appear on soildirect.com once you're approved.
Do I need my own website?
No. Your products are listed on soildirect.com, where customers get a delivered price for their address and check out. If you already have a website, you can keep it as your yard's home online.
You can also add a Buy button to your website from the portal. Customers who click it get the same delivered price and check out in your logo and colors, and the order is paid to your Square account like any other.
Payments and fees
How do I get paid?
Customers pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the payment is taken on your own Square account. The money reaches your bank on your normal Square payout schedule. Soil Direct never holds your money.
If a customer orders from more than one yard, each yard is charged separately, on its own Square account.
What does it cost to sell on Soil Direct?
There's no software to buy and nothing to install: you sign in with the Square account you already have. Card payments are processed by Square on your account at your usual Square rates.

How do refunds and order changes work?
If you decline or cancel an order, the customer is refunded automatically through Square to their original payment, and they see the reason you give. Removing an item or lowering a quantity refunds just the difference.
If a customer needs more material, change the quantity: the order is re-priced and Square emails the customer an invoice for the extra.
Products and pricing
What can I sell?
Bulk landscape and building materials: soil, mulch, compost, gravel, rock, sand, decomposed granite and more. Each of your products is matched to a Soil Direct product type so customers can find and compare it. If yours doesn't fit an existing type, you can suggest a new one.
Sell by the cubic yard, cubic foot, ton, pound, square foot or unit, or use your own custom unit from Square.
How is the delivery price calculated?
From your own numbers. Soil Direct measures the driving distance from your location to the customer's address, picks the truck and number of trips from each truck's load limits, and applies that truck's base charge, per-mile rate and any environmental fee. Tax is added, so the customer sees one delivered price.
Can I set different prices at different locations?
Yes. Prices are pre-filled from Square and can be set per location, and each location has its own delivery radius, delivery days and truck rates.
Do I have to write product descriptions?
No. The product editor can write a description for you with AI, which you can edit before saving, or rewrite one you already have.
Delivery and drivers
How far do I have to deliver?
You decide. Each location gets its own delivery radius, up to 50 miles, and only customers inside it can order from that location.
Can I choose which days and times I deliver?
Yes. Set delivery days and windows for each location in 30-minute steps. Customers pick a day and window from the ones you offer.
Do my drivers need to download an app?
No. When you assign a driver, they get a text message with a link to the delivery. It opens in the phone's browser with the address, Google Maps and Apple Maps buttons, and the load details.
How does proof of delivery work?
To complete a delivery, the driver takes at least one photo at the drop site, up to ten. The photos are saved to the order, and completing the delivery marks the Square order fulfilled.
Can one order go out on more than one truck or day?
Yes. A delivery plan splits an order across trucks, drivers and days, each with its own quantity. The week board shows every load, and you can drag one to another day to reschedule it.
Square
What syncs between Square and Soil Direct?
Your items, photos, categories, units, locations and prices come in from Square, and changes you make in the portal are written back to Square. Every paid order is created as a Square order at your location, and the customer is added to your Square customer directory.
Does Soil Direct track my inventory?
Soil Direct doesn't keep a separate stock count. Orders are created against your Square catalog items, so if you track stock in Square, Square adjusts it as usual.
Does it work with Square Loyalty?
It can. For yards that use Square Loyalty, customers can earn points under your own loyalty rules when a delivery is completed. Ask us to turn it on for your account.
